Psalms

Psalms gives God's people a Scripture-shaped language for worship and prayer. Its five books gather praise, lament, confession, thanksgiving, wisdom, royal hope, and remembrance so that faith learns to speak truthfully before the LORD without surrendering trust in his covenant faithfulness. Psalms 1 and 2 open the collection with the blessed way of God's instruction and the reign of his Anointed; the closing Hallelujah psalms widen the call to all creation. The New Testament reads royal and Davidic psalms such as Psalms 2 and 110 in light of Jesus' resurrection and exaltation, identifying him as the promised Messiah, the Son, and David's Lord; these psalms, like the rest of the collection, must still be read in their own literary and historical settings. Read as a whole, the Psalter trains the church to pray through suffering, repent of sin, hope in God's promises, receive the Messiah's reign, and praise the LORD together.

1. Begin with Psalms 1 and 2 as the Psalter's twin doorway. Keep the LORD's instruction and the reign of his Anointed together as you read what follows.
2. Read each psalm in its own voice and genre, then notice its placement within one of the five books: Psalms 1-41, 42-72, 73-89, 90-106, and 107-150. The doxologies help mark those divisions.
3. Attend to titles, speakers, historical notes, repeated words, and neighboring psalms. These features guide interpretation without erasing the poetry's continuing use in Israel's worship and the church's prayer.
4. Let lament and imprecation bring suffering and the longing for justice before God. Receive them as covenant prayer entrusted to the righteous Judge, not as permission for private vengeance or harm.
5. Trace royal and Davidic hope with care. Acts 2 and 13 and Hebrews 1 read Psalms 2 and 110 in relation to Jesus' resurrection and exaltation, identifying him as the Messiah, the Son, and David's Lord. Read these fulfillments canonically without turning every line of every psalm into a direct prediction detached from its first literary and historical setting.
6. Pray and sing the Psalms with the gathered people of God. Allow praise, confession, remembrance, complaint, thanksgiving, and hope to form truthful worship, and let the final Hallelujah sequence teach you where the whole collection is going.
