Hebron and Its Dependent Settlements Fall under the Conquest

The southern campaign continues beyond individual fortified centers to the political and settlement networks attached to them, and Hebron is presented as comprehensively defeated.

Understanding the Big Idea

Israel ascends from Eglon to Hebron, takes the city and its dependent settlements, and leaves no survivor in the conquest report. The movement is geographic as well as judicial.

This passage does not directly proclaim the gospel. It records severe covenant judgment in Israel's conquest. The church is not commissioned to reproduce Hebron's destruction. Under Jesus Christ, the nations are approached through disciple-making, gospel proclamation, reconciliation, and enemy love, while final judgment belongs to God. The severity of Hebron's fall therefore belongs within the whole biblical witness to divine holiness, human accountability, mercy in Christ, and final judgment.

To record Hebron's complete defeat within the southern campaign, extending the conquest judgment from the central city to its king, dependent settlements, and inhabitants.

Joshua 10:34-35 records Eglon's same-day capture and comprehensive destruction. Joshua 10:36-37 then moves Joshua and all Israel from Eglon to Hebron, where the city, king, villages, and inhabitants are defeated with an explicit no-survivor statement.
