Sermon Sequence
- 1Sermon 1 Isaiah 1:1-12:6
Judgment, Remnant, and the Holy One of Israel
The opening chapters expose covenant rebellion while preserving hope through the remnant and the promised child.
Prayer for this passage
Father, I confess that like Judah I have rebelled against you despite your covenant love, deserving the full weight of your judgment for turning from you like a stubborn child. Yet I am overwhelmed that you have not utterly consumed me, that by your sheer mercy you preserve a remnant and continue to call me back. Remake my corrupt heart through your holy vision and help me respond to your confrontation with genuine repentance rather than the empty religion you despise. I surrender myself to your preserving grace and commit to align my life with the covenant you have not abandoned.
- 2Sermon 2 Isaiah 13:1-23:18
Oracles Against the Nations
Judgment on the nations reveals that the Holy One rules all peoples and powers.
Prayer for this passage
Lord, your sovereignty over the nations terrifies me—you summon them as instruments of your wrath, and empires that seem immovable crumble before your judgment. When I consider the Day of the LORD and the cosmic upheaval it brings, I tremble at the thought of standing before your unrestrained power. Yet I surrender my life to you, trusting that the God who commands armies and shakes the heavens is worthy of my complete allegiance and fear.
- 3Sermon 3 Isaiah 24:1-27:13
Cosmic Judgment and the Feast of Hope
Cosmic judgment and promised vindication show that God will swallow up death and shame.
Prayer for this passage
Father, I confess that I stand among those who have transgressed Your laws and violated Your statutes, breaking the covenant You established. Your holiness demands judgment upon all corruption without distinction, and I tremble knowing that You empty and devastate the earth because of our rebellion. Yet I bow before Your rule as just and true, surrendering my life to honor the laws You have given and to trust in the mercy You extend even to those who deserve only judgment.
- 4Sermon 4 Isaiah 28:1-39:8
Woe, Trust, and the Limits of Human Power
The woe oracles, Hezekiah narratives, and warnings against pride call God's people to trust the Lord rather than political machinery.
Prayer for this passage
Lord, strip from me the pride that intoxicates and blinds me to your judgment, that I might not fall like Ephraim's fading crown trampled beneath your overwhelming hand. Make me part of your faithful remnant, for you alone are my true crown of glory and the spirit of justice I desperately need. I surrender my false coronations and rest my hope entirely in you, trusting that you will be my glory and my strength.
- 5Sermon 5 Isaiah 40:1-48:22
Comfort, New Exodus, and the Holy One's Freedom
Comfort, divine sovereignty, and the new exodus reveal that the Lord will rescue His people from exile.
Prayer for this passage
Lord, you speak comfort to those who have known your discipline, and we receive your word of forgiveness that makes a way in the wilderness for your scattered people. Open our eyes to behold your glory revealed, that we might see your strength and tenderness meeting us like a shepherd who gathers the lambs in his arms and carries us close to his heart. We surrender our fear and weariness to you, trusting that your word stands forever and your compassion never fails those you have called by name.
- 6Sermon 6 Isaiah 49:1-55:13
The Servant, Redemption, and Covenant Mercy
The servant songs and redemption promises gather the book's hope around substitution, mission, and restored mercy.
Prayer for this passage
Father, you have called your Servant from the womb with a purpose that spans from the restoration of Israel to the salvation of nations at the earth's ends, and I marvel at how you accomplish your covenant promise through one appointed instrument of light. As I contemplate this calling—costly and determined—awaken me to my own smaller calling within this greater mission, that I would neither despise the day of small things nor shrink from bearing your light to those far from you. I surrender my plans to your purposes and trust that you who formed your Servant in the womb and set him apart will sustain and vindicate his work, and mine through him, until your salvation reaches to the ends of the earth.
- 7Sermon 7 Isaiah 56:1-66:24
New Community, Final Judgment, and New Creation
The final chapters envision worship, justice, final judgment, and a new heavens and new earth.
Prayer for this passage
Lord, your salvation draws near and your righteousness is about to be revealed, yet I confess how often I neglect justice and turn from covenant obedience in the dailiness of my life. Awaken my heart to keep what is right, to hold fast to your ways, and to practice justice not as a distant aspiration but as the urgent response of one who knows your kingdom is at hand. I surrender my excuses and my complacency to you, trusting that as I align my life with your righteousness, I participate in the very salvation you are bringing near.
