Understanding the Big Idea

Makkedah is taken and its inhabitants fall under the conquest ban. The single-verse report locates this city in the continuing southern campaign.

This verse does not directly proclaim the gospel. It belongs to the severe judgment dimension of Israel's conquest. In the New Testament, the church is not commissioned to reproduce Canaanite warfare but to proclaim reconciliation through Jesus Christ, love enemies, make disciples, and leave final judgment to God. The gospel magnifies both divine holiness and mercy: the same God who judges evil provides salvation from judgment through Christ.
