Prepare to Teach

Titus 2:11-15

The saving grace of God has appeared in Christ, training believers to renounce ungodliness and live self-controlled lives as they await the blessed hope of His glorious appearing.

Scripture Text

2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

2:12 Instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

2:13 Looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

2:14 Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good works.

2:15 Say these things and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one despise You.

Anchor

The saving grace of God has appeared in Christ, training believers to renounce ungodliness and live self-controlled lives as they await the blessed hope of His glorious appearing.

Because God's grace has appeared bringing salvation and because Christ gave Himself to redeem and purify a people for Himself, believers must live disciplined, godly lives in the present age while eagerly awaiting His return.

Point of Contact

To ground the ethical instructions of Titus 2:1-10 in the redemptive work of Christ and to show that grace not only saves but actively trains believers for holy living. Because God's grace has appeared bringing salvation and because Christ gave Himself to redeem and purify a people for Himself, believers must live disciplined, godly lives in the present age while eagerly awaiting His return.

Rhythm
  1. 2:1 Command to teach what accords with sound doctrine
  2. 2:2–10 Instruction for various groups within the church (older men, older women, younger women, young men, servants)
  3. 2:11–14 The theological foundation: grace that saves and trains toward godliness
  4. 2:15 Final charge to teach, encourage, and rebuke with authority
Watch Out
  • Misreading: Grace eliminates the need for moral effort or discipline. Correction: Titus 2:12 presents grace as actively training believers to reject ungodliness and live upright lives.
  • Misreading: The blessed hope is escapism from present responsibility. Correction: Hope energizes present obedience, not withdrawal from faithful living in the current age.
  • Misreading: Good works are optional extras for especially devoted believers. Correction: Christ redeems a people eager for good works, making them a defining mark of His purified community.
Invitation Arc
  • Church teaching must emphasize that grace transforms behavior as well as beliefs.
  • Believers should live in the present age with disciplined character shaped by the hope of Christ's return.
  • The church should encourage eager devotion to good works as evidence of redemption.
  • Pastors should teach the gospel in a way that unites salvation, holiness, and hope.
