Joshua 19:40-48

Dan's Seventh Lot and Leshem

Dan receives a lot yet captures and renames Leshem after difficulty with its territory.

Scripture Text

19:40 The seventh lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Dan:

19:41 The territory of their inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-shemesh,

19:42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,

19:43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron,

19:44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,

19:45 Jehud, Bene-berak, Gath-rimmon,

19:46 Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, including the territory across from Joppa.

19:47 (Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it after their father Dan.)

19:48 This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Dan, including these cities and their villages.

Anchor

Dan receives a lot yet captures and renames Leshem after difficulty with its territory.

Dan's allotted place and the later capture of Leshem are both narrated, making allocation and actual possession visibly different in one passage.

Point of Contact

Move believers from comparison, passivity, and discontent into grateful reception, faithful stewardship, and servant-hearted leadership.

Rhythm

  1. Inheritance Adjusted Simeon receives cities within Judah’s allotment, showing that inheritance distribution includes correction, balance, and stewardship wisdom.
  2. Northern Allotments Continue Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, and Naphtali receive their defined territories through boundaries and city lists.
  3. Dan’s Troubled Possession Dan’s allotment is recorded, but the tribe’s struggle with possession leads to the capture and renaming of Leshem.
  4. Joshua’s Servant-Leadership Reward Joshua receives his inheritance only after the tribes receive theirs, displaying covenant leadership marked by service rather than self-seeking.
  5. Completion Before the LORD The allotment process concludes at Shiloh before the Lord, showing that inheritance is distributed under divine authority.

Crucial Turning Point

The remaining six tribal allotments are assigned to Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan, and after the land is distributed, Joshua receives his own inheritance at Timnath Serah.

The chapter argues that inheritance comes from the Lord’s sovereign distribution and must be received as stewardship rather than entitlement. The tribes receive their portions by lot before the Lord, and Joshua himself waits until the people are served before receiving his own inheritance.

Theological logic
  1. The remaining tribes receive their inheritance by lot
  2. Simeon’s inheritance within Judah shows that God’s people must steward abundance with covenant balance
  3. The northern tribes receive concrete towns and boundaries as assigned responsibilities
  4. Dan’s struggle shows that allotment does not remove the need for courageous possession
  5. Joshua receives his inheritance after the people receive theirs
  6. The process is completed by authorized leaders before the LORD at the tent of meeting
  7. The whole chapter shows inheritance as divine gift, ordered administration, and covenant responsibility

Watch Out

  • Do not place Leshem among the original towns in verses 41-46.
  • Do not assert a detailed chronology for the capture from this short notice alone.
  • Do not automatically commend every Danite action because it is reported.
  • Do not use the narrative to justify modern displacement or religious violence.
  • Do not equate Dan's land difficulty with failure of Christ's gospel.

Invitation Arc

  • Read Joshua 19:40-48 with attention to its stated details.
  • Do not conflate the original allotment with Leshem or treat the capture as a standing authorization for violence.
  • Teach Dan's Seventh Lot and Leshem in its narrative setting.
  • For Dan's Seventh Lot and Leshem, keep Christian salvation centered on Christ.
  • Present the passage movement in Joshua 19:40-48 without flattening its details.
Response
  • Receive your assigned responsibilities with gratitude
  • Refuse comparison with another person’s portion
  • Serve others before seeking personal benefit
  • Treat ordinary details as part of faithful stewardship
  • Bring questions of calling and responsibility before the Lord
  • Persevere when your assigned place requires hard obedience
  • Set hope on the final inheritance kept in Christ

Formation Aim

A content, diligent, worship-centered people who receive God’s assignments and steward them faithfully.

Canonical Thread

  • Jacob’s Tribal Blessings: The allotments for Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan connect with Jacob’s earlier prophetic blessings over his sons.
  • Moses’ Tribal Blessings: Some of the allotments echo or develop themes later associated with Moses’ blessing over the tribes.
  • Inheritance by Lot Before the LORD: Joshua 19 completes the land distribution according to the lot process commanded earlier.
  • Dan’s Later Relocation and Trouble: Dan’s difficulty in its allotted territory and capture of Leshem anticipates later Danite relocation and religious compromise.
  • Joshua’s Inheritance: Joshua receives Timnath Serah after the tribes, showing the Lord’s care for His servant and the servant posture of covenant leadership.
  • Final Inheritance in Christ: The completion of earthly tribal allotments contributes to the broader inheritance theme fulfilled in Christ and the new creation.

Gospel Clarity

Neither a tribal lot nor a military capture is the means by which sins are forgiven. The apostolic gospel proclaims Christ's death for sins and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); grace through faith, not possession of Leshem or Danite ancestry, grounds salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10).
