Genesis 17:1-8

God establishes an everlasting covenant grounded in His power, calling His people to live in faithful obedience.

Scripture Text

17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to Him, “I am God Almighty. Walk before me and be blameless.

17:2 I will make my covenant between me and You, and will multiply You exceedingly.”

17:3 Abram fell on His face. God talked with Him, saying,

17:4 “As for me, behold, my covenant is with You. You will be the father of a multitude of nations.

17:5 Your name will no more be called Abram, but Your name will be Abraham; for I have made You the father of a multitude of nations.

17:6 I will make You exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of You. Kings will come out of You.

17:7 I will establish my covenant between me and You and Your offspring after You throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to You and to Your offspring after You.

17:8 I will give to You, and to Your offspring after You, the land where You are traveling, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. I will be their God.”

Anchor

God establishes an everlasting covenant grounded in His power, calling His people to live in faithful obedience.

Genesis 17:1-8 presents God as El Shaddai, calls Abram to walk blamelessly, and establishes an everlasting covenant that includes descendants, nations, kings, and land.

Point of Contact

That believers would walk faithfully before God, trusting in His power to fulfill His promises across generations.

Rhythm
  1. 17:1–8 The Lord appears to Abram, identifies Himself as God Almighty, commands Abram to walk before Him and be blameless, reaffirms His covenant, changes Abram’s name to Abraham, and promises fruitfulness, nations, kings, everlasting covenant, and the land of Canaan.
  2. 17:9–14 God commands Abraham and His descendants to keep the covenant by circumcising every male, appointing circumcision as the covenant sign and warning that the uncircumcised male shall be cut off from the covenant people.
  3. 17:15–21 God changes Sarai’s name to Sarah, promises that she will bear a son, declares that kings of peoples shall come from her, hears Abraham’s concern for Ishmael, blesses Ishmael with multiplication, yet explicitly establishes the covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear at the appointed time.
  4. 17:22–27 God finishes speaking, and Abraham responds immediately by circumcising Himself, Ishmael, and every male in His household on that very day.
Watch Out
  • Do not interpret the call to be blameless as a condition for earning the covenant.
  • Do not detach obedience from covenant relationship.
  • Do not spiritualize away the physical land promise prematurely.
  • Do not overlook the significance of God’s self-revelation as El Shaddai.
  • Do not interpret the covenant as temporary or conditional on human performance.
  • Do not ignore the generational nature of the covenant.
  • Do not separate this passage from its fulfillment trajectory in Scripture.
  • Do not reduce the renaming of Abraham to a mere symbolic gesture.
  • Do not overlook the inclusion of nations and kings in the promise.
