Prayer for this passage
Father, You have spoken Your final and complete word through Your Son, and I confess that He is the radiance of Your glory, the exact representation of Your being, upholding all things by His powerful word. Thank You that through Him alone my sins have been purged and that He now sits at Your right hand, exalted above all creation. Keep me from drifting away from this supreme revelation of Yourself, and grant me steadfast faith that rests entirely on the sufficiency and supremacy of Christ, Your heir over all things.

Warning, Wilderness, and Rest

FormationMove from vague admiration of Jesus to deliberate consideration of Jesus.
Prayer for this passage
Father, we confess that we have often treated Jesus as merely another faithful servant in your house, when He is the very Son who built and sustains all things. Grant us eyes to see His supreme authority and position, and hearts that move beyond mere intellectual agreement to confident perseverance in following Him. As we belong to Christ's household, not through the temporary covenant of Moses but through the eternal faithfulness of your Son, we surrender ourselves to hold firm the confidence and hope we profess until the end.
- 3Sermon 3 Hebrews 4:14-7:28
Priesthood and Better Hope
Jesus' priesthood secures access and a better hope.
FormationMove from passive hearing to hearing united with faith.
Prayer for this passage
Father, I confess that I often rely on my own strength and hide my weaknesses from You, when Jesus has already passed through the heavens to make a way for me. Give me courage to hold firmly to my confession of Him and to approach Your throne of grace without shame, knowing that my High Priest understands every struggle I face because He has walked this earth in human weakness. I surrender my fear and self-sufficiency to His sympathetic intercession, trusting that in my moment of need, I will find not judgment but mercy and grace to help me endure.
- 4Sermon 4 Hebrews 8:1-10:18
New Covenant and Once-for-All Sacrifice
The new covenant and Christ's sacrifice fulfill the old order.
FormationMove from earthly-centered religion to confidence in Christ's heavenly ministry.
Prayer for this passage
Father, we thank you that Christ, our great High Priest, sits at your right hand in the heavenly sanctuary, mediating for us a better covenant enacted on better promises than the earthly shadows we once trusted. Forgive us for settling for lesser hopes and temporary remedies when you have secured for us the substance and reality of your presence through his superior ministry. We surrender our anxiety about our standing before you, knowing that Christ's heavenly intercession is infinitely more effective than any earthly priest could ever be, and we commit to building our lives entirely upon the better promises you have made through him.
- 5Sermon 5 Hebrews 10:19-12:29
Faith, Perseverance, and Discipline
The church is called to draw near, endure, and run with perseverance.
FormationMove from repeated guilt-reminders to rest in Christ's once-for-all sacrifice.
Prayer for this passage
Father, I thank you that through Christ's blood, you have opened for me a new and living way into your holy presence, removing the barrier of my sin and shame. Give me courage to draw near with a sincere heart and full assurance of faith, and strengthen me to hold fast my confession of hope without wavering, knowing that you are faithful. Stir my heart to love and good deeds, and help me spur on my brothers and sisters in Christ through faithful encouragement and gathered worship. I surrender my fear of approach and my tendency toward isolation, and I commit myself to persevering in this community of faith, trusting that your finished work has made me eternally welcome in your presence.
- 6Sermon 6 Hebrews 13:1-25
Final Exhortations and Blessing
The final exhortations show how the faithfulness of Christ shapes communal life.
FormationMove from theological confession to embodied brotherly love.
Prayer for this passage
Father, teach me to let brotherly love continue among those you have given me, and strengthen my resolve to keep the marriage bed undefiled and free from the love of money that so easily entangles my heart. Give me courage to say with the psalmist that you are my helper, so I need not fear what others may do to me, and grant me the contentment of knowing that you will never leave me or forsake me. I surrender my anxieties about provision and security to your faithful presence, trusting that as you have promised, so you will perform.
