    Prayer for this passage

Father, when Your purposes seem to contradict my expectations—when the younger is chosen over the elder, when the less likely receives the blessing—grant me the faith to remember that You establish Your covenant plans before I even understand them. You spoke Your election over Jacob in Rebekah's womb, accomplishing Your purposes through Your sovereign choice, not through human strength or preference. Help me release my grip on how I think Your kingdom should advance, and instead surrender my life to serve the purposes You have already purposed, trusting that Your selection is just and Your plans are sure.

  4. 4
    Sermon 4 Genesis 37:1-50:26

    Joseph and Providence

Suffering, providence, reconciliation, and preservation reveal God's ruling hand over the covenant family.

    Formation

From envying another’s calling to submitting to God’s sovereign gifts and purposes

    Prayer for this passage

Father, as Joseph's dreams exposed the jealousy festering in his brothers' hearts, awaken me to the envious and resistant places within my own soul that Your revealed purposes bring to light. Forgive me for the times I have opposed what You are doing in others' lives, mistaking Your favor toward them as a diminishment of Your care for me. I surrender my competitive spirit and choose to trust that Your sovereign plan is large enough to accomplish Your purposes through many vessels, and I commit to respond with humility rather than the bitter opposition that consumed Joseph's brothers.
