Sermon Sequence
- 1Sermon 1 3 John 1:1-4
Greeting, Joy, and Walking in Truth
John begins by celebrating Gaius's faithfulness and the joy that comes from his walking in truth.
Prayer for this passage
Father, teach me to lead and love as the elder did—with tenderness that speaks the beloved's name and with truth that binds rather than divides. Give me the courage to build fellowship on the foundation of your truth, not mere sentiment, so that those I shepherd know they are loved in both honesty and affection. I surrender my leadership to you, trusting that when I speak with truth-shaped love, I reflect your own heart toward those entrusted to my care.
- 2Sermon 2 3 John 1:5-8
Hospitality Toward Faithful Workers
The church is urged to support those who go out for the sake of the Name.
Prayer for this passage
Father, make us faithful like Gaius, whose love was proven not in words alone but in concrete hospitality toward those laboring for the gospel, even strangers whose names we did not know before. Give us eyes to see the traveling servants of Your truth and hearts willing to sacrifice our comfort and resources for their sake. Transform our understanding of faithfulness so that we demonstrate our commitment to Your truth through acts of care and support for those advancing the gospel, trusting that in serving them, we serve You.
- 3Sermon 3 3 John 1:9-12
Diotrephes, Demetrius, and Competing Examples
John contrasts domineering pride with faithful witness and commendable truth.
Prayer for this passage
Lord, examine my heart for any desire to lift myself up or to resist the correction and authority you have established in your church, and grant me the humility to receive instruction even when it challenges my preferences. Free me from the pride that Diotrephes embodied—the refusal to welcome your truth when it comes through those you have sent—so that I might serve the unity and mission of your body rather than my own prominence. I surrender my need for recognition and control to you, trusting that when I decrease and submit to apostolic truth, your church is strengthened and your name is exalted.
- 4Sermon 4 3 John 1:13-14
Closing Peace and Personal Meeting
The letter ends with a preference for face-to-face fellowship and a blessing of peace.
Prayer for this passage
Father, forgive me for the times I have substituted the convenience of distance for the richness of face-to-face fellowship with your people, and open my eyes to see how my physical presence carries weight and meaning in the lives of those you have called to be my brothers and sisters. Give me courage to prioritize the harder work of being present, to extend greetings that communicate genuine care, and to resist the hollow comfort of mere words when my presence is what brings your peace into the room. I surrender my excuses and my busyness to you, trusting that the time I invest in personal fellowship with your people is time invested in the very heart of what it means to live as your beloved community.
