Sermon Sequence
- 1Sermon 1 2 John 1:1-3
Greeting in Truth and Love
John greets the chosen lady by rooting Christian fellowship in truth, love, grace, mercy, and peace.
FormationTeach believers to define love by God's word rather than by instinct or pressure.
Prayer for this passage
Father, you have called us to walk in the truth that we have known from the beginning, and you command us to love one another—not as sentiment divorced from obedience, but as the very expression of keeping your commandments. Grant us the grace to reject the false division between doctrine and love, so that our adherence to your revealed truth flows naturally into sacrificial action toward one another. We surrender our tendency to pit belief against behavior, and we commit ourselves to walk in both truth and love together, knowing that this inseparable practice is the commandment we have heard from the start.
- 2Sermon 2 2 John 1:4-6
Walking in Truth and Love

- 3Sermon 3 2 John 1:7-11
Warning Against Deceivers
Truthful love includes a firm refusal to welcome teachers who deny Christ's coming in the flesh.
FormationTrain believers to test teaching by whether it remains in the apostolic truth about Christ.
Prayer for this passage
Father, give me discernment to recognize those who deny that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, and grant me courage to watch myself carefully and refuse fellowship that would compromise the truth of Christ's teaching. Keep my heart from being deceived by the deception of many who have gone out into the world, and help me to remain steadfast in the doctrine of Christ rather than progress beyond it into error. I surrender my desire for universal acceptance and comfort, trusting that guarding the truth—even when it costs me relationship and reputation—is how I truly love the church and honor you.
- 4Sermon 4 2 John 1:12-13
Closing Fellowship and Personal Presence
John ends by preferring face-to-face fellowship while preserving the letter's boundaries in truth.
FormationEncourage believers to pursue embodied fellowship and not rely only on distant or written interaction.
Prayer for this passage
Father, teach me that my faithfulness to truth is incomplete without the embodied presence and direct fellowship of those I shepherd and serve, for You have shown us that joy is made full only in face-to-face communion within Your family. Forgive me for the ways I settle for distant correction when You call me to costly, visible unity with Your people. Grant me the courage to leave my writings behind and show up in person, that together we might know the strengthening grace that comes from standing alongside one another in truth. I surrender my preference for efficiency to Your design for relational ministry, trusting that the time spent in direct fellowship is never wasted but essential to the deepening of joy in the gospel.
