1The second lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Simeon: Their inheritance lay within the territory of Judah

2and included Beersheba (or Sheba), Moladah,

3Hazar-shual, Balah, Ezem,

4Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah,

5Ziklag, Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susah,

6Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen—thirteen cities, along with their villages.

7Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan—four cities, along with their villages,

8and all the villages surrounding these cities as far as Baalath-beer (Ramah of the Negev). This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Simeon.

9The inheritance of the Simeonites was taken from the territory of Judah, because the share for Judah’s descendants was too large for them. So the Simeonites received an inheritance within Judah’s portion.

Understanding the Big Idea

Simeon's towns lie within Judah's portion because Judah's allotted territory is more than it needs. The second lot displays adjustment within the wider distribution rather than a detached new border.

How does Joshua 19:1-9 point to Christ?

Simeon's towns were assigned within Israel's land distribution. The Christian gospel rests on Christ's death and resurrection for sins (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); receiving forgiveness does not depend on descent from Simeon or residence in the southern towns. Ephesians 2:8-10 locates salvation in grace through faith, while the land catalogue retains its historical meaning.

Authorial Intent

The second post-Shiloh lot assigns Simeon named towns and villages within Judah's larger portion, then explains that Judah's allocation was too large and Simeon's inheritance came from it.

Joshua 19 continues the seven allotments begun at Shiloh in 18:1-10. The town catalogue is followed by a causative explanation in verse 9; that explanation governs how the overlapping names should be read. The following unit begins Zebulun's lot.

Historical Context

The southern towns include Beersheba and settlements reaching the region around Baalath-beer or Ramah of the Negeb. Some names appear in Judah's earlier catalogue because Simeon's inheritance is drawn from Judah's area. The text does not supply modern coordinates or population counts for the villages.
