Cities for the Other Kohathites
The other Kohathites receive ten cities across Ephraim, Dan, and Manasseh.
Scripture Text
21:20 The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Ephraim
21:21 They were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Gezer,
21:22 Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
21:23 From the tribe of Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon,
21:24 Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.
21:25 And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Taanach and Gath-rimmon—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
21:26 In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
Anchor
The other Kohathites receive ten cities across Ephraim, Dan, and Manasseh.
A separate Kohathite allocation distributes ten cities with pasturelands across three tribal sources, including Shechem's refuge designation.
Point of Contact
Move believers from vague gratitude into structured remembrance, shared stewardship, and confidence in God’s unfailing Word.
Rhythm
- Promise Claimed The Levites appeal to the Lord’s command through Moses and receive cities from Israel’s inheritances.
- Levitical Distribution Ordered The Levitical clans are apportioned cities by lot, showing that even non-territorial inheritance is distributed under divine order.
- Priestly Cities Assigned The descendants of Aaron receive cities near Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, placing priestly presence near key southern and central territories.
- Levite Clan Cities Assigned The remaining Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites receive cities throughout the tribal inheritances.
- Levitical Infrastructure Completed Forty-eight cities with pasturelands are assigned to Levi across Israel.
- Covenant Fulfillment Celebrated The narrator summarizes the Lord’s faithfulness: land, rest, victory, and every good promise have been given.
Crucial Turning Point
The Levites request the cities promised through Moses, Israel gives them cities and pasturelands from each tribal inheritance, and the chapter concludes by celebrating that not one of the Lord’s good promises failed.
The chapter argues that the land inheritance is incomplete without worship-centered covenant infrastructure. The Levites receive no territorial block, yet they are placed throughout Israel so that priestly service, teaching, refuge, and covenant memory are distributed among the people. The final declaration interprets the whole conquest-and-allotment section as the Lord’s faithful fulfillment of His promises.
Theological logic
- The LORD had commanded through Moses that the Levites receive cities and pasturelands
- The Levites appeal to the LORD’s word, not to tribal ambition
- The tribes give cities from their inheritances, showing that the land is stewarded under the LORD’s command
- The priestly and Levitical families are distributed throughout Israel
- Cities of refuge are included among the Levitical cities, linking justice, mercy, and priestly presence
- The total of forty-eight cities shows ordered fulfillment of the LORD’s instruction
- The chapter concludes that land, rest, victory, and promise fulfillment come from the LORD
Watch Out
- Do not call all Kohathites priests.
- Do not count Shechem's refuge status as an extra city.
- Do not omit the four-four-two distribution across three tribal sources.
- Do not treat the list as a conquest narrative.
- Do not make Levitical residence a means of salvation.
Invitation Arc
- Read Joshua 21:20-26 with attention to its stated details.
- Do not merge the ten cities of other Kohathites into Aaron's thirteen-city priestly group.
- Teach Cities for the Other Kohathites in its narrative setting.
- For Cities for the Other Kohathites, keep Christian salvation centered on Christ.
- Present the passage movement in Joshua 21:20-26 without flattening its details.

- Give from personal portion for the good of the whole covenant community
- Value teaching, worship, refuge, and justice as essential spiritual infrastructure

Canonical Thread
- Levitical Cities Commanded Through Moses: Joshua 21 implements the command that the Levites receive cities and pasturelands from Israel’s inheritance.
- Levi’s Inheritance: The Levites’ cities fit the larger teaching that Levi has no ordinary territorial inheritance because the Lord is their inheritance.
- Cities of Refuge: Several Levitical cities also function as cities of refuge, tying Levite presence to justice and mercy.
- The LORD Gave Rest: Joshua 21 declares rest in the land, which later Scripture reads as real but not ultimate.
- Not One Promise Failed: Joshua later repeats this promise-fulfillment truth in his farewell address.
- Promises Fulfilled in Christ: The New Testament proclaims God's promises in Christ; Joshua 21:45 remains a full historical assertion about what the Lord gave Israel.
Gospel Clarity
A city grant for Kohathite service is a historical provision. The Christian message is Christ crucified for sins and raised (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); saving grace is received through faith rather than membership in this Levitical family (Ephesians 2:8-10).
