Pentecost and Church

Overview

After the cross and resurrection, the ascended Christ sends the promised Holy Spirit at Pentecost and gathers a people from Jews and Gentiles who bear witness to Him among the nations. The church participates in the spiritual blessings of the new covenant — forgiveness, the indwelling Spirit, and access to God — while living between Christ's accomplished redemption and His return, and while God's unconditional promises to Israel await their full consummation.

What God Is Doing

God exalts the crucified and risen Jesus as Lord and Christ, pours out the promised Spirit, and gathers a Spirit-indwelt people from Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles through the apostolic witness. He establishes the church as the visible community of Christ's disciples, marked by the apostles' teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, prayer, baptism, holiness, mutual care, and mission. Through the gospel, God reconciles sinners to Himself, grants forgiveness and the Spirit, unites believers to Christ, builds His people into a holy temple, and sends them as witnesses until the consummation of all things.

What the People of God Face

The people of God receive the Spirit, the Word, forgiveness, spiritual gifts, and incorporation into one body, yet they also face persecution, false teaching, internal sin, ethnic tensions, suffering, and the ongoing battle between flesh and Spirit. The church is called to repent, believe, endure, guard the gospel, walk in holiness, love one another, remember Christ's death, proclaim His resurrection, and make disciples among all nations. This stage is full of grace and pressure at the same time: Christ truly reigns and the Spirit truly indwells His people, but the church still waits for the full appearing of the Lord and the renewal of all things.

Canonical Movement
Fulfills

This stage fulfills Christ's promise that His followers would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them and would be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. The church receives and participates in the spiritual blessings promised in the new covenant — forgiveness, the indwelling Spirit, and transformed hearts — while the new covenant's full and final fulfillment with Israel awaits the consummation.

Anticipates

This stage anticipates the consummation, when the Lord who now reigns from heaven will appear, raise the dead, judge the world, fulfill every covenant promise, and dwell with His redeemed people in the new heavens and new earth. The church's mission, suffering, holiness, and hope all point forward to that final public completion.
